When we were doing research on who could most benefit from our wireless speakers for TV, we were saddened to learn that there are millions of U.S. military veterans who are coping with tinnitus and hearing loss.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs admits that, “Hearing problems—including tinnitus, which is a ringing, buzzing, or other type of noise that originates in the head—are by far the most prevalent service-connected disability among American Veterans.”
Kinds of Hearing Loss Seen in Veterans
There are two types of hearing loss that veterans are susceptible to, according to VA research on hearing loss:
- Conductive hearing loss, which is due to damage to the eardrum and middle ear structures
- Sensorineural hearing loss, caused by damage to the inner ear and auditory nerve
There is some goods news. “Some hearing loss can be reversed through surgery or medication,” the VA reports. “In other cases, hearing loss is permanent, but can be reduced through the use of hearing aids.”
Currently, the VA says there are close to three million veterans who are receiving disability benefits for hearing loss or tinnitus. In most cases their hearing was damaged as a result of the loud noises that accompany active duty, including gunfire, roadside bombs, aircraft and helicopter engines, tanks – even the kinds of heavy equipment in use.
“Normal age-related hearing loss can make the problem worse,” AARP points out.
AARP also says that:
- Veterans are 30 percent more likely than nonveterans to have severe hearing impairment, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis.
- Those who served after September 2001 are four times more likely to suffer hearing loss and need a TV listening device than those who haven’t served.
